Hapkido, as it is practiced by Rising Sun School of Martial Arts, is a unique system of energetic understanding, blocks, strikes, kicks, joint locks, immobilizations, and throws that have been perfected and honed over time into a powerful, effective method for continuing mental and physical development.
Hapkido (one translation: "The Way of Coordinated Power") is a Korean martial art derived from the blending of Japanese Daito-Ryu Aikijutsu and Judo with various Korean styles. Daito-Ryu Aikijutsu, a style designed around joint locks, throws, and pressure points (part of what was later to evolve into Aikido), was brought from Japan to Korea by Yong Sool Choi after World War II. In Korea, the style was blended with several Korean styles that focused on dynamic strikes and kicks, and the original version of Hapkido was born.
